New Delhi: Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi arrived in Kolkata to kick off the GOAT India Tour 2025 on Saturday, setting off a wave of excitement in the City of Joy. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner landed after travelling from Miami via Dubai, and even at a late hour, many fans packed the airport for a glimpse of the former Barcelona legend.

The fans chanted his name, waved the flags of Argentina and climbed onto barricades as police tightened a heavy security ring around the terminal. Tour organiser Satudru Dutta said that there's a great atmosphere of joy that Messi is coming to India after 14 years.

"Football’s connection to India is growing again. Never before have so many sponsors come to Indian football,” he added.

Huge fan turnout

Messi's fans rushed to the airport before his flight landed, saying the moment felt surreal. "We have been waiting for two hours. If needed, we will wait for even four. We can’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," a fan told ANI. After Kolkata, Messi will travel to Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi during the three-day tour.

A Packed day for Messi

Messi’s Kolkata schedule starts with a private meeting from 9.30 am to 10.30 am, which is exclusive for the selected guests and organisers. He will then virtually inaugurate a statue dedicated to him, a gesture marking Kolkata's deep affection for the World Cup winner.

The highlight for most of his fans comes later in the day as the former Barcelona player is scheduled to take part in a friendly match at Yuva Bharati Stadium, where thousands are expected in the stands. An interaction programme with the fans at the same venue will close out his Kolkata engagements.

Tickets for the events are available on the District app, starting at about Rs 4,500. The Demand for the GOAT tour is high, and most of the categories are already sold out.
