New Delhi: Arsenal missed the chance to go eight points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 0-0 draw against defending champions Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday, January 8.
The Gunners had won seven consecutive home league games and were expected to capitalise on Aston Villa and Manchester City dropping points, but were held by a Liverpool side, which extended their unbeaten league run to nine games.
Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion, while the match between Crystal Palace and Aston Villa ended in a goalless draw. Liverpool started the game slowly but grew in confidence as the match progressed and came closest to breaking the deadlock when Conor Bradley hit the crossbar in the first half.
The hosts also never seriously troubled goalkeeper Alisson throughout the match, and failed to attempt a shot between the 45th minute and second-half stoppage time. The draw put Arsenal six points clear of Manchester City and Aston Villa, while Liverpool remain fourth, 14 points adrift from top spot.
Real Madrid sealed a Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona after beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 on Thursday. Federico Valverde and Rodrygo scored on either side of halftime, setting them on course for victory.
Xabi Alonso's side will face Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday in Jeddah, which is a repeat of last year's final. Real Madrid scored the opening goal in the second minute of the match when skipper Valverde fired a powerful free kick from 25 yards out into the top corner.
Rodrygo then went close to doubling the lead on the break before Atletico Madrid grew into the match, forcing goalkeeper Courtois to make some sharp saves, denying Alex Baena and Alexander Sorloth. The Los Blancos extended their advantage in the 55th minute when Rodrygo latched onto a precise pass from Valverde and calmly netted past Oblak.
Atletico hit back just three minutes later as Giuliano Simeone delivered a stunning cross to the back post, where Sorloth rose above Raul Asencio to score and reduce the deficit. Rodrygo almost scored his second goal, but Oblak made a crucial save to deny him, while Courtois also denied Antoine Griezmann's acrobatic attempt as Real Madrid reached in the Spanish Super Cup final.
