Manchester United are likely to announce the appointment of Michael Carrick as the interim manager on Tuesday. The club has reached an agreement in principle to appoint the former English midfielder as the new manager for the remainder of the season and is working on some minor details before officially announcing the move.
It is understood that Carrick will have funds at his disposal to strengthen the squad should a long-term target become available.
According to BBC Sport, Steve Holland is set for the assistant manager role in United's coaching team under new interim head coach Michael Carrick. Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion will also be part of Carrick's coaching staff.
Meanwhile, Darren Fletcher, who has taken the reins for the two games since Ruben Amorim's sacking, will also reportedly be allowed to be part of the coaching team.
Carrick has previously worked with Woodgate at Middlesbrough, where he was the manager in the Championship from 2022 to 2025. In his sole managerial stint, Carrick oversaw 136 matches, winning 63 and losing 49.
Carrick, who beat tough competition from Ole Gunnar Solskjær during the interview process, will work as the interim boss of United for the first time on Wednesday when the players return to training after two days off.
United is targeting to complete the deal on Tuesday, so Carrick can get going ahead of Saturday's Manchester derby. Once appointed, he is expected to speak to club media and will also attend a press conference to express views on the game against Manchester City on either Thursday or Friday.
Carrick's decision to work with Holland has been dubbed a masterstroke by the British media. Holland has been an assistant coach to some of the best managers in the business.
From August 2009 to June 2017, Holland enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Chelsea, winning the Premier League twice, one Champions League, one Europa League, one FA Cup and one League Cup.
