Man United speed up hiring process for next manager after meetings with Carrick, Solskjaer
Manchester United have accelerated the appointment of a new manager after holding talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick.
New Delhi: With less than a week to go for the Manchester derby, Man United want its next manager to give the new manager the rest of the week to prepare the team for the headline fixture at Old Trafford. The hunt for the new manager has gathered pace, and the appointment seems imminent following the club's meetings with Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. T
The former United players are the two frontrunners for the top post following Ruben Amorim's departure from Old Trafford.
Darren Fletcher, who took charge in the interim role for two games, admitted on Sunday that he will report back to his former duties with the Under-16 team at Carrington training ground. Fletcher managed the team against Burnley in the Premier League and in the 1-2 FA Cup defeat against Brighton on Sunday.
Both Carrick and Solskjaer have held meetings with the club's board, and further talks are scheduled for Monday concerning the two. Director of football Jason Wilcox will reportedly lead those meetings as the club targets a swift resolution.
Having been eliminated from both cup competitions, United now have only the Premier League to focus on. The new interim head coach's primary goal will be to qualify for European football next season.
Carrick frontrunner for the United job?
According to Sky Sports, the club hierarchy was hugely impressed by Carrick's vision and pitch for the job, but Solskjaer's popularity and record during his previous stint as head coach will also be taken into consideration.
Solskjaer was appointed United boss in similar circumstances when Jose Mourinho left the club in 2018 and was given the role permanently in March 2019 after a successful run of results.
The Norwegian led the club to the Europa League final but was axed in November 2021 after a dismal run of form. Meanwhile, Carrick succeeded Solskjaer for a three-match interim stint in November and December 2021.
