PL wrap: Nottingham Forest thrash Liverpool, Barnes bags brace as Newcastle beat Manchester City
Premier League: Nottingham Forest stunned defending champions Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield, Newcastle United defeated Manchester City 2-1 at home.
New Delhi: Nottingham Forest defeated defending champions Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Saturday. The visitors have claimed consecutive wins at Liverpool's iconic ground for the first time in 62 years.
Murillo, Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White scored goals to seal Forest's win, handing Arne Slot's team a sixth loss in their last seven league games. Liverpool have slipped to 11th position in the table with 18 points, eight behind leaders Arsenal, who will take on Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates on Sunday, while Nottingham Forest are 16th.
Murillo netted from a corner that the hosts failed to clear in the 33rd minute. Liverpool players argued that an offside Dan Ndoye was standing in goalkeeper Alisson's line of sight, but the goal stood after a check.
Savona scored just after halftime when Neco Williams pulled the ball back from the byline, and the Italian slotted it past Alisson. Gibbs-White sealed the victory for Forest when Alisson made a brilliant save of Omari Hutchinson's shot, but the ball fell to the Forest captain, who netted from the centre of the box in the 78th minute.
Newcastle United 2-1 Manchester City
Newcastle United forward Harvey Barnes netted twice in seven minutes as his side defeated Manchester City 2-1 at home on Saturday. The thrilling victory stopped the visitors from closing the gap on Arsenal at the top of the league table.
Both sides missed plenty of chances in the first half, but the game changed after the hour mark when Barnes collected the pass from Bruno Guimarães on the edge of the box before arrowing a shot into the bottom-left corner.
The visitors were not behind for long as Ruben Dias scored an equaliser five minutes later with a deflected drive, but Barnes reacted quickly after Bruno Guimaraes headed against the crossbar two minutes later to help Newcastle take the lead. Newcastle defended brilliantly for more than eight minutes of stoppage time to hold on for a victory.
