According to reports, LAFC paid over $20 million for the transfer. The fee could end up being the highest ever for an incoming MLS player. The club is one of the most ambitious in the league clearly ensuring Son as a statement signing.

Son brings not just experience but also star power. As he leaves Tottenham over the years he has one of the most explosive forwards in world football having scored 173 goals in 454 appearances. Just a few months ago, he helped the North London club lift the Europa League trophy, ending their long wait for European silverware.

Perfect fit in LA

Beyond football, Son's move to Los Angeles makes sense on many levels. The city is home to the largest Korean population outside Korea and LAFC's BMO Stadium sits just a few miles from the heart of Koreatown. His presence is expected to spark massive interest in the community and potentially mirror the commercial impact Shohei Ohtani has had for the Dodgers.

At 33, Son still has the pace and technical ability to influence games. Unlike some recent aging MLS arrivals, Son is arriving with enough gas in the tank to make a difference right away.

Familiar faces, fresh ambition

Son will reunite with his former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris at LAFC and his arrival gives the team an attacking boost heading into the second half of the season. LAFC currently sits sixth in the Western Conference but has games in hand due to their Club World Cup commitments.

While other high-profile targets like Antonie Griezmann slipped through the club's fingers, LAFC now has a global star ready to take the spotlight and win the 2026 World Cup approaching, Son's move stateside might be the perfect bridge between club ambitions and international legacy.
