New Delhi: Sweden have announced Graham Potter as their head coach, weeks after he was sacked by English Premier League side West Ham United, in a bid to salvage their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The country's football association (SvFF) has said the 50-year-old has been handed a contract covering the rest of the World Cup qualification period, in addition to any potential play-off and the finals should they qualify.

"I am very humble about the assignment, but also inspired," Potter said in a statement posted by SvFF.

"Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the best leagues every week. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer."

Potter's reputation as a coach was enhanced during a seven-year spell at Swedish club Ostersunds FK. He then went on to manage Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion in England's second division, before taking charge of Premier League sides Chelsea and West Ham.

Potter replaced Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was sacked for poor results. Potter lasted less than seven months at Chelsea before joining fellow London side West Ham, which also ended as a short-term appointment.
