New Delhi: Brentford forward Yoane Wissa has gone with his frustration at the club, accusing them of going back on their word and blocking his move away before the transfer deadline.
With just hours remaining in the summer window, the 28-year-old striker released a strong statement on social media, claiming Brentford had promised he would be allowed to leave if a "reasonable offer" came in. According to Wissa, those assurances were even put down in writing. He now believes the club has changed its stance despite repeated bids from Newcastle United.
The DR Congo international has not featured for Brentford so far this campaign. He also removed any mention of the club from his Instagram account earlier this summer making clear his desire to move on.
Newcastle have already tested Brentford’s resolve twice with their latest offer believed to be £35 million plus £5 million in add-ons. However, the Bees are now holding out for closer to £65 million, a fee well above the figure they had initially valued him at.
Wissa insists this sudden hike in valuation has left him in an impossible situation. “I believed there was a mutual agreement to part ways this summer,” he said. “Being made to stay will only tarnish four wonderful years at this club.”
However, Brentford are reluctant to lose another key attacker in the same window after selling Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United for £65 million. They have already moved to bring in Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth but Wissa’s departure would still leave a major gap in their frontline.
The tension between player and club has been stretched for weeks now. Wissa cut short Brentford’s pre-season camp in Portugal to push for the move and while he briefly returned to training, he has since been working away from the first-team squad.
The striker scored 49 goals in 149 games for Brentford since joining in 2021 and says he does not want to leave on bad terms. “I have not acted unprofessionally, nor do I wish to disrespect the fans,” he stressed. “This is about the club keeping its promise.”
Whether Brentford relent before the deadline ends remains to be seen. For now, Wissa’s future is hanging in the balance and the standoff could yet shape the final hours of the window.
