Fritz beats Zverev as Team World clinch Laver Cup
Team World defeated Team Europe 15-9 to win the Laver Cup at Chase Centre in San Francisco.
New Delhi: Taylor Fritz backed up his stunning win over Carlos Alcaraz with a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory against Alexander Zverev that enabled Team World to lift the Laver Cup, their third triumph in four years.
The American's two wins against top three ranked players in the ATP Rankings gave Team World five points in their 15-9 victory at Chase Centre in San Francisco.
"We're going to have a fun night. Definitely popping some champagne in the locker room in a few minutes," Fritz said before the trophy ceremony, as quoted by atptour.com.
In his debut on the dugout, new Team World captain Andre Agassi tasted instant success as his inputs lifted his team throughout the competition.
"Just seeing these guys on the bench getting pumped up, seeing a legend of the sport like Andre jumping out of his seat cheering for me, it's impossible not to be so fired up and just give it everything you have," Fritz added.
Alcaraz leads Team Europe fightback
World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-2, 6-1 to keep Team Europe’s Laver Cup hopes alive.
The Spaniard had earlier teamed up with Casper Ruud in the opening doubles to notch a crucial win but after Alex de Minaur defeated Jakub Mensik, Team World needed only a point to win the trophy.
It put the 22-year-old Alcaraz under pressure as a defeat to Jakub Mensik could have ended Team Europe's campaign. But in the must-win game, Alacarz rose to the occasion.
In just over a hour on the court at the Chase Centre in San Francisco, Alacaraz hardly put a step wrong in a commanding display of tennis that kept Team World's lead within reach of Team Europe.
But that was as far as Team Europe could go as Fritz had the last laugh over Zverev.
