Sunrisers Hyderabad have unveiled an ultra-hitting batting template in the Indian Premier League and no wonder they have scored the two highest team totals in the tournament.
Last year, they thrashed Royal Challengers Bengaluru to all corners of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to score 287/3, the highest innings total by a team. Travis Head was the star hitter of that match with a 58-ball 102-run knock, with nine boundaries and eight sixes.
They came close to that mark in the ongoing 2025 edition of the tournament. On March 23, Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to field and were made to regret that decision as Sunrisers Hyderabad smashed 286 for 6, registering the second highest team total in IPL's history.
Head was again a contributor in SRH's score, blasting 67 runs in 31 balls, including nine fours and three sixes. But it was Ishan Kishan who ran riot with his maiden IPL ton, an unbeaten 106 off 47 balls, studded with 11 boundaries and six sixes.
At their home ground of the Uppal Stadium, in the opening game of IPL 2025 Hyderabad began from where they left off last season. Each of the first six batters who batted a minimum of three balls had individual strike rates of over 200.
Head and Abhisek Sharma opened the batting and put on a 45-run stand in 19 balls. Sharma then departed after 24 runs off 11 balls with five hits to the fence.
Kishan then took charge of the run-plundering alongside a willing partner in Head and took SRH to 130 in 9.3 overs. Head went back but Kishan carried on with Nitish Reddy (30 off 15 balls, 4x4, 1x6) and then with Heinrich Klaasen (34 off 14, 5x4, 1x6).
Hyderabad had reached the 200-run mark in only 14.1 overs (85 balls), which remains the joint highest mark in the tournament. At point they threatened to surpass their own mark of 287 but losing three wickets in the last two overs pegged them back to just a run behind, though it was enough to be the second best in the all-time chart.
It was the fourth time that Hyderabd posted a score of over 250 runs, the most by any team in domestic T20 and T20 internationals, overtaking English County side Surrey and the Indian cricket team.
Rajasthan pacer Jofra Archer bore most of the brunt of SRH batters as his 76 runs in four overs became the most expensive spell in IPL's history.
Kishan was the toast of the entire SRH camp as they won by 44 runs with Rajasthan managing to reach 242/6 in their run chase.
"Feels good, it was coming for a while. Wanted to get this last season but was happy to get that first hundred. The team has put their faith in me, and I want to do my best for them. The captain has given us all a lot of freedom and confidence, hats off to the management," Kishan said.
"When Abhishek and Head started, they gave a lot of confidence to us batters in the dugout. The pitch was looking good and we were just trying to get them under pressure. We need to be on point with the ball, keep it simple.
"Rajasthan bowlers are good but if we bowl in the right areas and to the plans, we should be good," he added.
