Ill finally be able to sleep peacefully: Nupur delivers on World Boxing Cup promise with gold medal

New Delhi: The final day of the World Boxing Cup Finals 2025 witnessed an extraordinary start as four Indian women boxers won gold medals in the first session at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida.

Minakshi Hooda began the gold rush with the country's first gold at the marquee event in the 48kg category after defeating Uzbekistani boxer Farzona Fozilova 5-0 in the finals.

Preeti bagged another gold for India by defeating Italy's Sirine Charaabi 5-0 in the women's 54kg final. Arundhati Choudhary joined the party and completed India's hat-trick of golds by overpowering Zokirova Aziza from Uzbekistan 5-0 in the women's 70 kg final.

Nupur Sheoran clinched the fourth gold of the day with a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan's Sotimboeva Oltinoy in the 80+kg final.

It was a special moment for the five-time National champion from Haryana, who, after clinching silver at the World Boxing Championship 2025, vowed to bring home gold in the World Cup. After delivering on her promise, Nupur can finally sleep peacefully.

"It feels really great to win the gold. Today I'll finally be able to sleep peacefully. I'll definitely sleep for 8-9 hours because after winning silver at the World Championships, I lost my sleep," Nupur told Tv9 English in an exclusive interaction following the historic win in World Boxing Cup 2025 Finals.

Boxing runs in Nupur's family. Granddaughter of boxing legend Hawa Singh, Nupur, always carries the weight of expectations whenever she steps into the ring. However, judging by her recent performances, it's quite clear that she is keen to carry her two-time Asian Games gold medal-winning grandfather's legacy forward rather than get burdened by the weight of expectations.

Claiming a World Championship silver is not the pinnacle by any means, but it is a big enough achievement for any boxer. For Nupur, though, it was a setback. 

She vowed to turn his World Championship silver into gold at the World Cup and worked really hard with her coaches, especially on the technical aspects.

"We worked more on my attacks because I mostly play as a counter-boxer, using cross punches. So I focused on improving my attacking game, and today you must have seen that my opponent wasn’t able to attack much because she knew I play strong counterpunches. That’s why I improved my attacking style as guided by my coaches," Nupur told TV9 English.

Meanwhile, Jadumani suffered a heartbreaking loss in her final bout against Asilbek Jalilov of Uzbekistan in the women's 50kg final to settle for silver. Her defeat ended India’s golden run on the final day.

While the Indian women's boxers were on a roll on Thursday, multiple pugilists in the men's category fell at the final hurdle. 

Abhinash Jamwal settled for silver after losing to Japan's Shion Nishiyama in the men's 65 kg final, while Ankush ended his campaign with a silver after losing to England's Shittu Oladimeji in the men's 80kg final.

Earlier on Wednesday, India scripted history as a record 15 Indian boxers qualified for the finals of the World Boxing Cup 2025 finals, the highest representation among the eight elite competitors.
