IPL 2008 Orange Cap and Purple Cap winners

The Indian Premier League 2008 had a different charm altogether being the first edition of the cash-rich league. The world had never witnessed such a kind of cricketing tournament with so much excitement and a plethora of talent performing along with each other. The IPL brought players from different countries together with eight teams, in the inaugural edition, fighting for the elusive trophy.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) were crowned the winners in the first edition of IPL as they beat Chennai Super Kings in an exciting final match to win the trophy. Royals, led by the late Shane Warne, kept their cool against the MS Dhoni-led Super Kings, to win the match on the last ball of the contest with thrill and excitement gripping the entire DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Yusuf Pathan played a pivotal role in Rajasthan's winning campaign after he claimed three wickets in the first innings against CSK and then played a crucial knock if 56 runs in the chase to set the perfect base for the Royals. Pathan was named the Man of the Match for his remarkable role in the finale while Shane Watson, who picked a wicket and scored 28 runs for RR, was named the Player of the Series for scoring 472 runs in 15 matches and also scalping 17 wickets.

IPL 2008 Orange Cap winner

Shaun Marsh was named the Orange Cap winner in the 2008 edition of the Indian Premier League. Marsh, representing Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), scored a total of 616 runs in just 11 matches with a best score of 115 runs. After a successful stint with the Australian cricket team, Marsh who was roped in by the Punjab franchise, delivered in the inaugural edition with perfection. Marsh, who was relatively not so famous in world cricket till then, became the only uncapped player to have ever bagged the award in the IPL at an age of 24.

IPL 2008 Purple Cap winner

In the first edition of IPL in 2008, Pakistan player Sohail Tanvir, who represented Rajasthan Royals (winners of the edition) won the Purple Cap. Tanvir proved to be remarkable for the title-winning franchise as in just 11 matches, he snapped 22 wickets, playing a pivotal role in the team winning the edition. Tanvir’s best bowling figures of 6/14 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in one of the league encounters remained the best in the cash-rich league for over a decade, till it was surpassed by Alzarri Joseph (6/12) representing Mumbai Indian against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2019 edition.
