Chinappa, Abhay and Anahat help India beat Hong Kong to clinch historic maiden Squash World Cup title
Joshna Chinappa, Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh produced clinical performances in the final to help India beat Hong Kong 3-0 to win their maiden Squash World Cup title.
India defeated Hong Kong 3-0 in the final of the mixed team event at the Squash World Cup 2025 to lift their maiden title on Sunday, December 14. The trio of Joshna Chinappa, Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh combined to script history by powering India to its maiden World Cup crown in squash. They produced clinical performances in their respective clashes in the final to secure a commanding victory against title favourites Hong Kong.
Playing their first-ever final in front of the home crowd in Chennai, the Indian team consisting of Chinappa, Abhay and Anahat made the most of the roaring support to dominate the proceedings in the title clash. Chinappa gave India the perfect start in the final by beating Ka Yi Lee 7-3, 2-7, 7-5, 7-1 in the women's singles game.
Abhay then made it 2-0 for India by beating Alex Lau 7-1, 7-4, 7-4. Anahat sealed the historic gold for India by beating Asian champion Tomato Ho 7-2, 7-2, 7-5 in the third game. Velavan Senthilkumar, the local lad, was not required to play as India won 3-0. The gold medal triumph marked India's best-ever performance in a Squash World Cup, surpassing their bronze medal victory in 2023.
Joshna Chinappa beats Ka Yi Lee to give India the lead
Backed by enthusiastic home fans, veteran Joshna Chinappa got India off to a flying start in the mixed team final by beating Ka Yi Lee in the first game. She displayed immense grit and composure to wrap up a hard-fought 7-3, 2-7, 7-5, 7-1 win inside 23 minutes. The 39-year-old won the first game of her match comfortably at 7-3, before Lee mounted a comeback in the second to win 7-2.
Chinappa fought back in the third game and took control of the proceedings by winning 7-5. In the final game, she completely outclassed her opponent to win 7-1 and put India in the lead in the high-pressure summit clash.
Abhay Singh makes it 2-0 for India
After a strong start from senior player Chinappa, Abhay Singh defeated Alex Lau 7-1, 7-4, 7-4 in an emphatic manner in the second match to double India's lead in the final. Abhay was ruthless from the start as Lau was no match for his skills and pace on the court. The Indian won in straight games to extend India's advantage in the final.
Anahat Singh wins it for India
After terrific performances from senior players Chinappa and Abhay, young Anahat Singh continued the momentum in the third match of the final by beating Asian champion Tomato Ho 7-2, 7-2, 7-5 in straight games. Anahat secured India's maiden World Cup title with her dominant victory against Ho as the arena erupted in cheers for the Indian team.
With their historic victory, India became only the sixth nation in history to win a major World Squash team event.
