Kidambi Srikanth storms into quarterfinals of Canada Open with straight-game win

Kidambi Srikanth stormed into the quarterfinals of the Canada Open Super 300 tournament on Thursday with a comfortable straight sets victory over Chinese Taipei's Wang Po-Wei.

Star Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth stormed into the quarterfinals of the Canada Open Super 300 tournament on Thursday with a comfortable straight sets victory over Chinese Taipei’s Wang Po-Wei. The Indian badminton player prevailed over the the world number 71 player 21-19, 21-12 to register a dominant win in the ongoing event.

Srikanth, who is a 2021 World Championships silver medallist and the 2022 Thomas Cup winner, showcased quality and class at the same time outplay the opponent who happens to be one of the most competitive badminton players in the world.

The Indian shuttler struggled in the initial part of the match as he was trailing in most of the opening game. However Srikanth, fighting back from 5-11 down, drew parity at 18-18 getting back into the match in a superb fashion. From that point, he was on a roll as he pocketed the game by winning three of the next four points displaying his best badminton skills to push the opponent towards the wall.

The second game met a similar fate as Wang looked in a fabulous touch racing to a 6-1 lead initially. But what seemed to be a domination from the Chines Taipei tuned out to be in favour of the Indian as Srikanth tuned the tables with a seven-point burst to go up in the interesting game by 8-6.

The Taipei shuttler again regained a one-point lead at the break and went ahead 13-10 but the Indian was quite precise in his delivery as he he moved ahead with nine straight points to take the match away from his opponent. thereafter, he sealed the interesting clash comfortably.

The world number 49, who had reached the final of the Malaysia Masters in May this year, is likely to face Chinese Taipei’s top seed Chou Tien Chen next.
