As a player, the West Indian had been central to Mumbai's theme and he repaid with several memorable performances over the years. The burly right hander could hit sixes at will but with the ball, he could make crucial breakthroughs.
As a fielder he was exemplary, particularly in the deep and could throw down the wickets at ease. In Mumbai's winning campaign in 2013, he scored 420 runs and claimed 10 wickets from 18 matches, also becoming the player of the final. In 2020 too, he played a stellar role in Mumbai's march to the ISL, striking the ball at a rate of 191.
223 sixes
One of the biggest hitters of the ball, Pollard is among the top 10 of batters with most sixes in the IPL. In 189 matches, he scored 3412 runs at an average of 28.67 and strike rate of 147.32 with 16 fifties.
The right hander hit 223 sixes and 218 boundaries to be seventh on the all-time list headed by former West Indian opener Chris Gayle, who hit 357 sixes in his IPL career.
Mumbai Indians batter Rohit Sharma is second on the list of most six hitter with 297 maximums followed by Virat Kohli's 285 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Pollard is so highly valued by the Mumbai management that they kept him on the books as a batting coach even after his retirement. He earlier backed Rohit to come out of his slow start to the IPL 2025 campaign and then questioned those who had criticised the former India batter at the start of the competition.
"If my memory serves me right again, the start of this competition, that question was different, and I said, sitting right here, we are also going to be singing his praises, and for us we always had that belief that he's going to come good and I just want to continue to urge you guys at times to give guys the opportunity," Pollard said.
"There are dips, there's little confidence, but for someone who has played the sport for a long time, you have these moments, and sometimes you just need that extra support from people. "So now we're singing his praises," the former all-rounder said.
With five consecutive victories, Mumbai are second in the standings with 12 points and are on course to qualify for the play-offs. Their star players Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and skipper Hardik Pandya have all delivered after a bumpy start.
"We're all very happy in the Mumbai dressing room. We're happy at the start as well, knowing that it's going to happen and long may it continue so that the headlines are going to be about that," he added.
"But you know, for us in our entire batting unit we look for guys to perform at different junctures in the tournament. So now, guys are stepping up. Other guys haven't got an opportunity, and it's sort of working well, so we're very happy.
"So we're not going to individualise it and just speak about Rohit and Suryakumar, the other batters who have contributed as well to winning and the manner in which we are in the tournament at this present time."
