PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen to form core of Indian squad in Badminton Asia Team Championships

PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are set to represent Indian in the Badminton Asia Team Championships.

New Delhi: Two-time Olympics medallists PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and the star pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty ae set to form the core of the Indian squad to take part in the Badminton Asia Team Championships to be played in Qingdao, China from February 3-8.

India would be the defending champions in the women's category of the competition whereas the men's team had won two bronze medals in the past. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Thursday confirmed the same in a release saying that all the players have been selected on the basis of their ranking and performance.

'Selected on the basis of ranking, performance, and experience, the women’s team will once again be led by former world champion and two-time Olympics medallist, PV Sindhu,' the Badminton Association of India said in a release.

Sen to be top-ranked men's player

World number 13 Lakshya Sen would be the top raked men's singles player in the squad which also features the likes of other Indian shuttlers namely Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, US Open winner Ayush Shetty, and Tharun Mannepalli.

Meanwhile, Satwik and Chirag will be leading the doubles unit along with runners-up of the Guwahati Masters Sai Pratheek K and Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy, as well as Hariharan Amsakarunan.

On the other hand in the women's category, Sindhu will be supported by world junior championships silver medalist Tanvi Sharma, Unnati Hooda, Rakshita Sree Santhosh Ramraj and Malvika Bansod in singles, Syed Modi International champions Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly will lead India’s charge in the doubles while Priya Konjengbam, Shruti Mishra, and Tanisha Crasto complete the squad.

Women’s team: PV Sindhu, Unnati Hooda, Tanvi Sharma, Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj, Malvika Bansod, Treesa Jolly, Gayatri Gopichand, Priya Konjengbam, Shruti Mishra, Tanisha Crasto.
