New Delhi: World No.1 Jannik Sinner kept his winning streak ongoing as he recorded a 23rd successive victory in hard-court Grand Slams to advance to the third round.
Sinner wrapped up the game in just two hours, dominating with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The defending champion has not lost a single match on hard court since his 2023 US Open fourth-round exit.
Popyrin was a strong contender as he knocked out 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the third round last year, but Sinner produced another spectacular performance.
After the win, the Italian highlighted there is still room for improvement as he was not very impressed by his first serve. He said, "I felt like we both didn't serve great but I was returning very well, especially on the second serve." He added, "I'm very happy about today. Obviously I'm aiming to improve the serve but, about the rest, I feel quite comfortable."
Sinner is chasing history at Flushing Meadows as he looks to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to defend the US Open crown. The 24-year-old has already collected Australian Open titles in 2024 and 2025, along with last year’s US Open trophy, and has now stretched his winning streak at hard-court majors to 23 matches.
The 24-year-old’s second-round victory also underlined his dominance on this surface. Sinner owns a 41–9 record in his first 50 hard-court Grand Slam matches, the very same mark Federer achieved at the same stage of his career.
The Wimbledon champion will face 27th seed Denis Shapovalov in the next round as he bids for a third Grand Slam of the year.
Naomi Osaka advanced to the US Open third round with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win over Hailey Baptiste. The four-time Grand Slam champion needed just 70 minutes to finish the match and seemed fully composed, going with big strokes only when necessary.
Since the addition of coach Tomasz Wiktorowski on board, she has won eight of nine games. In fact, after her most disappointing defeat in Montreal, she didn't let that halt her momentum.
She will next play Daria Kasatkina in the next round, as she seems to have championship gleam in her eye.
