New Delhi: The 20th edition of the World Athletics Championships will kick off in Tokyo on Saturday, September 13, giving sports fans across the globe to witness some exhilarating action for the next nine days as top athletes in the world gear up to compete in Japan's capital.
The showpiece event will be held at Japan's National Stadium, rebuilt for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and 2020 Summer Paralympic Games, as Japan gets ready to host the Championships for the third time after hosting two previous editions in 1991 and 2007.
The World Championships, which are regarded as one of the biggest events after the Olympics, will feature a full range of track and field action, including 12 track events and eight field events.
More than 2,000 athletes from around 200 nations are set to take part in the Championships. As many as 147 medals will be awarded across 49 events in an action-packed event, which offers a whopping £6.3 million prize money.
India's medal hopes rest on Neeraj Chopra, who will return to the Japanese capital four years after winning the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Chopra will lead a 19-member Indian contingent, including a record five javelin throwers - four in the men's category.
Defending world champion Neeraj will have his task cut out for him in Tokyo against current Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan and Julian Weber from Germany, who will pose a tough challenge in Chopra's bid to defend his world title, which he won in 2023 in Budapest.
Apart from Neeraj, Sachin Yadav, Yashvir Singh, and Rohit Yadav will be participating in the javelin throw. Whereas Asian Games Champion Annu Rani will feature in the Women's javelin event.
India's fastest man, Animesh Kujur, and Tejas Shirse create history by qualifying in the 200m and 110m hurdles, respectively.
In the last edition of the World Athletics Championship, India sent 28 athletes to the event in 2023, but with no relay teams qualified this time, the number decreased from 28 to 19 athletes.
India have won three medals – one gold, one silver, and one bronze – in World Athletics Championship history. Two of them were won by Indian superstar Chopra, including one gold and one silver medal.
The first Indian to win a medal in the World Athletics Championship was Anju Bobby George. She won a bronze medal in the women's long jump event in 2003.
