Apple has released new public beta firmware for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4, and tech enthusiasts cannot wait to experience the new features. The update is available to the public beta testers and developers and can be run on a device running iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS Tahoe. This is the first time AirPods beta firmware is available to the general tester group, which will provide access to new innovative audio features.

The firmware comes with build number 8A5343a and a range of upgrades that are designed to meet the demands of the modern user. From better call quality to special camera control options, the update is meant to allow a better AirPods experience. The decision by Apple to involve public testers is an indication of a change toward the more inclusive development of software where user input can influence the final releases.

Enhanced audio and call quality

The new firmware enhances audio performance on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4. Video and phone calls are now more natural sounding. The update also has studio-quality audio recording, which is suitable for podcasts, interviews, and videos. Users will enjoy a higher level of listening and recording experience, and this will mark a new standard of wireless earbuds.

New camera remote feature

One of the most notable features is the possibility to use AirPods as a camera remote. Users can take some pictures or initiate video recording by pressing and holding the stem with the use of the Camera app. This aspect increases the convenience of content creators, and AirPods become a multifunctional device when coping with audio and visual work.

Streamlined beta installation process

Apple has also made the firmware upgrading process easier by adding a new installation option. It can be found in the settings of AirPods in an iPhone, iPad or Mac with iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS Tahoe. The AirPods have to be in the charging case, connected to Wi-Fi, and within Bluetooth range. This simplified method obviates cumbersome workarounds, but it is not yet possible to update manually.

Availability and future outlook

The beta software is limited to the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4, featuring the new H2 chip. To join the testing group as a public beta tester, one can join the Beta Software Program by Apple at beta.apple.com. The features are exciting, but Apple cautions that beta software is notorious and cannot be uninstalled until a stable version is available. These developments are an indication that Apple has continued to perfect its wireless audio technology.
