Apple’s C1 modem speed test shows promising 5G performance ahead of iPhone 17 Air launch

Apple's C1 modem in the iPhone 16e has undergone new speed tests by Ookla, showing performance close to Qualcomm's Snapdragon X71 in most markets. Results varied by carrier, with T-Mobile U.S. speeds lower on the C1 but higher in Spain compared to Qualcomm.

The findings reassure users as the upcoming iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature the same modem.

The performance of the C1 modem designed specially by Apple has been tested once again, and the outcome is positive going forward with the launch of the iPhone 17 Air. Ookla, the developer of the popular Speedtest service, announced some new results on the iPhone 16e using a new modem. According to the analysis, the original in-house 5G modem at Apple is performing at a comparable level with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X71 that is installed in the regular iPhone 16.

There were similar results in general, but results were different between regions and carriers. The iPhone 16e has median 5G download speeds of 252 Mbps on the U.S. network of T-Mobile, which is less than the 317 Mbps of the iPhone 16. But in Spain the roles were reversed, with the iPhone 16e recording 139 Mbps over the iPhone 16’s 110 Mbps. Such uniformity in markets indicates the Apple modem is competitive, and it is ready to be rolled out to a broader market.

Comparable 5G performance across markets

The report by Ookla outlines the fact that the modem used by Apple is not only good but also reliable. The majority of markets displayed the same pace between the two devices, which supported the previous conclusion in March. This result is an indication that Apple is slowly moving out of the Qualcomm addiction without experiencing any loss of 5G experiences for users.

What it means for iPhone 17 Air

The findings are important since Apple will supply the next-generation ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air with the same C1 modem. These tests are giving Apple a lot of confidence that its new device will perform well in the network, as it has got its big event today. The first applications of the iPhone 16e can already attest that the modem is capable of withstanding the industry standards, making Apple confident in its own technology.
