New Delhi: Zimperium, a cybersecurity company, has discovered a new Android spyware named ClayRat. It is aimed at the users primarily in Russia. The malicious code is a worm. It attacks the devices through counterfeit applications before accessing contacts. In a period of three months, researchers identified more than 600 samples. This illustrates its rapid rate of development. ClayRat is located in droppers which imitate Play Store updates. Android security bypassed these tricks. Users see a familiar screen. However, the actual payload runs in the background.

The Android SMS handler role is used as a vulnerability by the spyware. This provides it with wide coverage without additional prompts. It reads notifications, call logs and texts. It even takes snapshots on its front camera. ClayRat transmits itself to the control servers using HTTP. It throws junk code in order to conceal its tracks. Even when it is indoors, it makes the phone a spreader. It sends out bait messages, such as 'Be the first to know', to all contacts with a bang. It is difficult to contain because of this automation. Scientists say that it might strike outside Russia in the near future.

The virus takes back home with stolen data. It steals device identities and location clues. Call logs go out too. There are shots of faces taken by a front camera.
