Excel’s new Copilot AI formula completions: Boost spreadsheet efficiency

New Delhi: Microsoft has added a new feature to Excel called Formula Completions, which is driven by the AI Copilot. This tool assists users to write faster and error-free formulas. It uses artificial intelligence to give a full formula, depending on the information in the spreadsheet. The feature will make the complex tasks simplified for all, including the beginners and the experts. It was announced at the beginning of September 2025 and is yet another step toward the introduction of AI into daily productivity tools.

Users do not have to memorise the exact syntax or search functions online. Formula Completions is an analysis of a workbook within context. It provides the recommendations immediately after typing the equals sign. This saves time and increases accuracy. There are early adopters who are claiming that it reduces troubleshooting. Microsoft claims that the tool can process different types of data, and it could be used in the fields of finance, data analysis and so on.

Formula completions begin on starting a formula. Type everything in a cell, and AI searches the header, nearby values, and existing formulas. It then advances a complete formula and forecast of the outcome. There is a short definition of what it does. The more you write, the more a representation will appear next to your typing. A loading bar indicates progress when it is required.

First, make sure that data is in a table format. This assists Copilot to perceive more in context. Launch Excel, and then in a target cell, press the Copilot icon on the Home tab. Wait until the suggestion comes. The preview and description are reviewed. Accept it with Press Tab or Enter. In case it is not correct, then add more characters to perfect it. In the case of columns, select the Copilot pane, choose 'Suggest a formula column' and insert the preferred one.

Easily calculate changes in revenue on a yearly basis. It may be a percentage formula that the copilot recommends using a table. In the case of addresses, it would be possible to present a REGEX to retrieve ZIP codes. In sales data it calculates profit per item; that is the difference between revenue and costs. Always verify the output.

It is becoming available to Excel for the web Copilot subscribers in the US English language. It can be tried by Windows Insider Beta users. It requires a Microsoft 365 business plan. Better results are with a clear header. Another sheet is not referenced at this point. Prefer to opt out using settings. Some more languages are on their way.
