New Delhi: Google is taking Gmail to a new phase by integrating its Gemini AI assistant that will make email management quicker, smarter and easier. Gmail has used AI in other features such as Smart Replies and spam filtering, already having more than 3 billion users across the globe. This time Google would like Gemini to be a proactive assistant which can assist in searching for information, composing emails and concentrating on what is really important.
With inboxes overwhelmed as never before, it is no longer sufficient to search emails. According to Google, it is planned that the Gemini-powered updates will decrease the information overload and transform Gmail into something that does not only store the message but also assists the user in making sense of the message. A lot of these features are being rolled out today in the US, with English support being the first.
The AI Overviews in Gmail are one of the largest upgrades. Rather than having to scroll in emails, users would now get summaries of the emails in brief, outlining important points. Gemini can immediately summarise a discussion in a concise, readable format when one opens a conversation with dozens of replies.
Users are also able to pose their inbox direct questions in a natural language. Indicatively, a question like 'Who presented a quote to renovate the house last year?' will make Gemini go through all the emails and provide a clear response. All users can now access conversation summaries at no charge, and inbox Q&A with AI Overviews is the preserve of Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Gmail is also upgrading its writing tools. Help Me. The write feature is no longer exclusive to users, and everyone is able to compose new emails or edit the old ones within a short time. Smart Replies are now enhanced as Suggested Replies, which are based on conversation context to produce answers which are closer to the tone and style of a user.
The addition of a new proofread feature provides more complex checks in terms of grammar, tone and clarity prior to an email being sent. The Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are free to everyone, whereas Proofread is restricted by the AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions. Google also affirmed that next month, Help Me Write will be personalised further by extracting context from other Google applications.
One of the other significant additions is AI Inbox, which is meant to eliminate the clutter in the inbox. This does not have to display emails in a basic chronological sequence but rather use AI Inbox to reveal urgent tasks, significant reminders and communications with important people.
Based on cues, e.g., number of contacts, past communication history, or even the contents of messages, Gemini ranks high-stakes emails, e.g., future bills or doctor visits. According to Google, it is a secure process, and user privacy is ensured. AI Inbox is already in testing among a small group of people and will be launched to a broader audience in the near future.
These new Gmail features start rolling out today in the US. The additional support will be offered to more languages and regions later this year. This update will see Google positioning Gmail as more than an email service but as an intelligent assistant that will enable users to stay organised and get more things done.
