New Delhi: Google has introduced an Emergency Live Video option to Android users, which would accelerate the response to an emergency by providing the dispatcher with visual information in real time. The option enables the emergency agencies to demand a safe and real-time video flow from a cell phone and enables the responding agencies to think about the scenario more effectively before they get there. It operates on an emergency text or call, and it is set up to operate without the user having to set it up.

The tool, according to the company, is based on the Android Emergency Location Service (ELS), which already offers accurate location information in case of an emergency. It is now possible to combine visual cues with the mix, and dispatchers are able to direct callers on the most important steps to take, including life-saving steps, as help is en route. The feature is encrypted, and the user is in full control, so they can stop the stream at any time.

How emergency live video works

In case of emergency contact, dispatchers can make a request to the phone of the caller to enable live video. The prompt will be displayed on the screen, and users can begin sharing the feed with just a single tap. Google claims that the system is safe and does not need any extra application configuration or authorisation to access the emergency calls.

Emergency Live Video is based on ELS, which relies on the Android location provider, by using the Fused Location Provider, to calculate speedy on-gadget location by using GPS, Wi-Fi, cell networks, and additional sensors. According to Google, this makes the first responders have more accurate and timely information. ELS supports Android 8 or more devices with Google Play services.

Its feature is already being rolled out in the United States, as well as a few areas in Germany and Mexico. It is a part of other Android safety products such as Car Crash Detection, Fall Detection and Satellite SOS. Google reports that it is collaborating with the world to enable more countries to have emergency live video through collaboration with the agencies in charge of public safety.
