NotebookLM is an AI-powered research and note-taking assistant developed by Google, which is now being improved with a new feature, Video Overviews. This update was announced on Tuesday, and it is an addition to the visual aspect of how users consume complex content such as PDFs, raw notes, and images. The aspect converts information that is dense into fun and simple-to-understand video presentations.

Video Overviews are the next development after the previous introduction of Audio Overviews, which created podcast-like summaries with AI virtual hosts. Google is new in the sense that it is looking to make the information as easy to comprehend as possible by visual storytelling. It is now being rolled out to all users of the English language, and more languages are to be supported.

Visual alternative to audio overviews

According to Google, video overviews can be considered as the visual equivalent of audio overviews. The tool imports pictures, graphs, quotes, and statistics into uploaded documents to develop comprehensible visual interpretations. It is created to make the user comprehend difficult topics, describe the trend of data, or make abstract concepts simpler.

The videos made by the user are customisable depending on their learning objective, their type of audience, or a particular subject. Regardless of whether one is new to a topic or a professional dealing with a specific field, they are able to formulate specific questions to derive appropriate responses to their material.

Improved studio panel and multitasking features

The NotebookLM Studio panel is being updated by Google as well. It is now possible to generate and save a variety of output of a similar type within the same notebook. The panel now has one-click tiles on the top for Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps, and Reports.

Moreover, it is now possible to multitask in the Studio panel. To illustrate, an audio overview can be listened to when browsing through a mind map or a study guide, making the research and learning process even more efficient.
