A unique 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) is provided to Indian employees for the administration of their Provident Fund (PF) accounts. It simplifies the tracking of PF funds even if you have shifted jobs. Opening a UAN is now not only convenient but also easy thanks to the EPFO portal. The system enables individuals to manage their PF accounts personally, thus not requiring the involvement of the employer to save time and reduce paperwork.

The process of acquiring a UAN can be ambiguous to many workers, including first-timers or those not very familiar with the EPFO system. The digital process requires only necessary documents, such as an Aadhaar card and proof of bank account. This guide shows you how to set up a UAN online step-by-step with simple instructions to follow for anyone who goes through the process. Employees will be able to activate their UAN and use PF services with no difficulty once these steps are through.

Eligibility for UAN creation

It is only possible to create a UAN if you are working in an EPFO-registered institution. Private and public organisation employees, who contribute to the PF, are eligible for UAN. The verification process requires a mobile number with an Aadhaar card. Also have to submit a valid bank account and PAN card. Your UAN cannot be generated until your employer has registered your details on the database at the EPFO.

Steps to generate a UAN online

  • Visit the EPFO Portal: Go to the EPFO website:
  • Access the UAN Registration Page: Go to the Unified Member Portal and find the “Activate UAN” or “Register Individual” link. Click on it to start your application.
  • Enter Personal Details: Provide your Aadhaar number, name of the person, date of birth, and verified mobile number. Verify that the information furnished is consonant with your Aadhaar records. Your registered mobile number will receive an OTP which must be entered to verify.
  • Verify OTP and Submit: Enter the OTP and submit. Your details will be verified and authenticated by the EPFO database. If your employer has already simplified your records, you should proceed without hindrances.
  • Fill Additional Information: Submit your bank account details and PAN number and PF member ID if you have a PF member ID. Ensure that you cover all fields because your application will not pass without being thoroughly checked.
  • Generate UAN: After inserting all the information, the platform automatically creates your UAN. You should get the UAN by text and email. Hold it safely on you; it may be useful later.
  • Activate UAN: Go back to the UAN portal, enter your UAN and mobile number to log in and create a password. You can now access your UAN because it has now been enabled.

Documents required

A couple of particular documents are needed in the online creation of a UAN. You need to submit your Aadhaar card, PAN card, and the details of your bank account, account number and IFSC code. In order to get verification through OTP, your mobile number should be linked to your Aadhaar. Ensure your employer has informed the EPFO of your data because this is required for your records to be entered in the system.

Benefits of having a UAN

A UAN simplifies PF management. It allows you to check cash inflows, move PF funds from one job to another and safely withdraw money through a digital medium. Such services as passbook updates and claim submissions can be performed through the UAN portal or using the UMANG app. The UAN allows you to monitor employee contributions on-site.
