OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reportedly stated that India might soon be the biggest ChatGPT market, even bigger than the United States. He pointed out that the country was fast embracing large language models and a high number of users within the last year. Altman will travel to India in September to build partnerships and discuss new opportunities to incorporate AI into businesses and daily life.
Altman added that India is already the second-largest market of OpenAI, and user numbers have tripled in 2024. He commended the creative applications of ChatGPT that have been made, ranging from starting start-ups to streamlining operations. The new release of the model by OpenAI, ChatGPT 5, is also associated with enhanced multilingual support, including 12 Indian languages to better meet the local market.
ChatGPT chief Nick Turley of OpenAI told Reuters that his team is working on developing AI in larger Indian languages. This is coupled with tangible improvements in Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) in order to render the tool more effective for the local users.
Earlier this year, OpenAI promised to host the data of Indian users of ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and its API platform locally. The ruling facilitates the data sovereignty needs, and Indian companies will be able to use the AI solutions more compliantly and confidently.
