New Delhi: The latest Economic Index report released by Anthropic has shown that India has become the second-largest market in the world to use Claude.ai due to software and web development jobs. The results highlight the increasing contributions of India to the world in the use of generative AI tools, especially among developers and technical experts.

According to the report, which is the fourth edition of the Economic Index published on January 15, India has the second largest overall Claude.ai usage after the United States. Still, usage is also very concentrated in a limited number of countries with Japan, the UK, and South Korea also taking a prominent place amongst the countries that include India.

Developers lead Claude.ai adoption in India

Almost fifty percent of all Claude.ai in India is associated with technical work. Approximately 45.2 percent of activity would be under computer and mathematical activities. The top 5 out of 10 use cases in the country are software and web development. This points out the fact that Indian developers are resorting to AI more often to help them in their daily coding, debugging, and development needs.

Web development is still more pointed. Indian users are also more likely to use Claude twice as much as the global average to use CSS, HTML and UI styling tasks. They are also 1.7x more expected to utilize the tool in building and debugging web applications, which is an indication of high usage in frontend and full-stack development functions.

Growing use in AI, data and emerging tech

Indian users are high users of an emerging technology besides traditional coding. According to the report, India is overrepresented (1.5 times) in work involving creation of AI systems, such as chatbots and workflow automation. The use of database administration and data engineering is also out of the global baseline of 1.4 times.

Claude.ai does not happen to be an exclusive technical work. The tool is also used by Indian users to search jobs, develop professional skills, conduct academic research in STEM subjects, and start-up and entrepreneurial business planning.

India is ranked as the second world in terms of overall consumption intensity but on a per-population basis, the consumption intensity is relatively low. The AI Usage Index of Anthropic puts India at 0.22. This means that the usage of Claude.ai remains low as compared with the large number of working age people in the country implying that there is still plenty of potential to expand.
