India has presented a comprehensive roadmap toward becoming a global leader in 6G technology by 2030. The government has issued a set of measures that include establishing special labs and financing research projects to establish international partnerships. It is hoped that this will enable future-ready telecom networks that will exceed 5G and will satisfy the requirements of the ITU-R IMT-2030 framework.

The Bharat 6G Vision Document released in 2023 is a plan of India to design, develop and deploy 6G technologies that provide intelligent, secure and seamless connectivity. Some of the benefits of 6G compared to 5G are that it offers faster data rates, very low latency, the use of AI or AI-native networks, and the ability to combine communication with sensing technologies. The push is also geared towards establishing strong research centres and industry-academia partnerships so as to hasten innovation.

Govt initiatives to drive 6G

The government has established 100 5G laboratories in academic institutions to develop a 6G-ready ecosystem. In the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), 104 projects to the tune of Rs 275.88 crores have been approved to fund research in advanced telecom technologies. These projects are collaborations of start-ups, MSMEs, academia and industry players.

Bharat 6G alliance and global partnerships

To promote collaboration, the Bharat 6G Alliance has been created, uniting the domestic industry and academic and research institutions. The alliance has also entered into agreements with the major global 6G consortiums to advance cooperation. The step would be anticipated to make India a part of the development of international 6G standards and frameworks.

Next-gen networks research hubs

A Technology Innovation Hub has been set up in IIIT Bangalore under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems. The hub is in mid-development of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) and state-of-the-art O-RAN Massive MIMO systems. These technologies will assist in enhancing network coverage, capacity and sensing capabilities needed to deploy 6G.
