Instagram has introduced a range of new functions that allow users to be closer to their friends and share content with them. The update adds a new feature in Reels called "Friends” and the possibility to share a location using Instagram Maps and repost any public posts and reels. These tools intend to increase the relevance of interactions by centring on the contents that users and their friends share, enjoy and discuss.

Instagram says the new updates are to continue their mission of promoting more social connections on the platform. These tools enable the users to observe what their friends are consuming, to view local content with less clatter and to share in a more personal manner. Here’s a breakdown of all the features.

Repost public reels and posts with ease

Instagram recently enabled its users to share publicly shared reels and feed posts to their own profiles. Reposts will be presented in a special tab in the profile of a user and can be displayed in the feed of his followers. This provides a user the easy means of sharing their interest and things that they like. Creators will be a beneficiary since their posts can now have a wider audience due to reposting.

In order to repost, a user is required to tap the repost icon below any public reel or post. They are also able to append a note to provide context or to express thoughts, which will be displayed together with the repost.

Location sharing with Instagram map

The new Instagram map allows you to share your live location with your chosen friends. This is a fully optional feature that can be very customised. The user has the option to select the people to view their location and the people they do not want to see their location, and they can turn it off any time. Teenagers are also allowed to access this feature, which can be controlled by the parents who monitor the teenager.

The map also allows one to explore content at a specific location through the tagged location without being required to give your location. This has reels, posts, stories, and notes that have been created by friends or creators; it aids individuals in getting to know about local events, places to hang out, or even sneaking some secrets.

See what friends are watching in reels

A new "Friends” tab in Reels lets users see what friends are liking, commenting on, re-sharing or posting. The feature also comprises content from Blends, custom shared feeds between friends. Users can now begin conversations around the videos that their friends are watching.

The Friends tab is now rolling out worldwide, and Instagram is also introducing new privacy features. These include concealing likes or comments from other people and silencing the activity of particular users within the tab.
