New Delhi: The leak by Weibo source Smart Pikachu has given rumours that Apple is finally ready to place Face ID sensors under the screen on the next iPhone 18 series. The post states that Apple is experimenting with micro-transparent glass panels that have the ability of letting infrared signals of the TrueDepth system pass through the screen without any distortion. This is consistent with the industry methods that apply micro-perforated or nano-patterned glass to enhance transmission of IR in a designated region over the sensor array.
As Apple enters the critical period of making decisions on its hardware in the 2026 flagship models, the leak comes. It was already noted by other analysts and supply-chain sources that a smaller Dynamic Island will be part of the iPhone 18 Pro line, with Face ID components concealed beneath the display. The most recent assertion supports that idea and states that suppliers are planning to produce massively.
In a post by Smart Pikachu, it is argued that Apple will use micro-transparent glass panels to move the Face ID hardware under the screen. Although the leaker refers to the iPhone 18 series in general, previous reports suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the future foldable made by Apple are the most probable devices to implement the technology at first. Whether this will be the regular iPhone 18 or the speculated iPhone 18e/Air 2 is not entirely clear.
Despite Face ID shifting under the display, analysts like Ross Young and Mark Gurman still think that Apple will retain a small cutout for the front camera. Young indicates that the pill-shaped space will reduce, whereas other reports indicate that there is also a small pinhole camera under test. The concept of a slimmer Dynamic Island over a total removal is backed by the new micro-glass leak.
It is anticipated that in 2026 Apple may launch the iPhone 18 Pro models in September and its first foldable iPhone during a split-cycle launch. Early 2027 is said to be the release of the regular iPhone 18 and cheaper iPhone 18e, and it will allow Apple to perfect the new under-display technology across the range.
