New Delhi: Microsoft has launched Copilot Checkout, a new AI-powered shopping feature that allows users to search for products, compare options, and complete purchases directly inside the Copilot chat window. The tool turns normal conversations into instant shopping journeys.

The feature is now live in the US on Copilot’s web platform, with a wider global rollout planned in the coming months. Microsoft has partnered with Shopify, PayPal, and Stripe to power the checkout experience. For now, users can buy products that are listed on Shopify through Copilot.

How Copilot Checkout works

Copilot Checkout is easy to use. Copilot can be queried by users to give suggestions on a product, including a phone, shoes, or a dress to an occasion. The AI displays a list of products and prices and description. Once the user clicks on an item, a ‘Buy’ button is displayed. On tapping it, a secure payment window opens through which the purchase can be made.

Once a user has checked out, his/her order confirmation, delivery details and a tracking link are provided. The whole experience of the discovery through paying occurs within the same stream of chat.

Microsoft stays out of the transaction

Microsoft claims that it will not have control over payment systems, customer data, and order fulfillments. The shopping experience is only facilitated by the company. The customer engages with the merchant using PayPal or Stripe. The customer relationship is still owned by the merchant.

The strategy is supposed to prevent legal and trust problems that other AI shopping platforms have experienced. It also provides the sellers with greater control over what to do with buyers once they have made a sale.

Strong early results

Microsoft claims the early numbers look promising. According to the company, users who interact with Copilot are 53 percent more likely to make a purchase within 30 minutes. When someone shows clear shopping intent, that number jumps to 194 percent.

These figures suggest that AI-driven conversations can strongly influence buying decisions by reducing friction and speeding up choices.

Merchants can now sign up

Merchants using PayPal or Stripe can now apply to join Copilot Checkout. Microsoft says more retailers will be added throughout the month as the rollout expands.

With this move, Microsoft joins Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity in the race to make AI assistants a central part of online shopping. But its focus on keeping merchants in control could give Copilot an edge in the fast-growing AI commerce space.
