New Delhi: PhonePe has launched ChatGPT-based features within its UPI app, a significant move to implement conversational AI in the context of daily digital payment in India. The integration would be very useful to the user when they are making a transaction, searching or browsing before making payment. It is among the most massive rollouts of an AI chatbot in a UPI ecosystem, as it offers direct access to AI-based advice to the PhonePe users without the need to exit the application.

The rollout includes both consumer and business applications, which support such activities as travel planning, product comparison, and merchant information. According to OpenAI, the collaboration is consistent with its strategy to further implement AI in the country, as India has a rapidly developing need for smart digital solutions. PhonePe explains that the entire ChatGPT interface will not be visible in the application; however, core functionality will answer user questions in selected workflows.

The AI capabilities of PhonePe are related to payment-related situations. Low-cost travelling facilities can be requested, merchant information can be checked, or services can be compared by the user before they make UPI payments. The application will offer contextual recommendations upon the needs of the user, and all the choices will remain in the app, which is a part of the expansion plan in India by OpenAI.

The collaboration is part of the recent efforts of OpenAI in the country, such as it establishing its office in Mumbai and a 1 GW data centre that costs 20,000 crore. One example of the potential of agentic AI transactions is the company already collaborating with Razorpay and NPCI to pilot AI-enabled UPI payments. In an effort to increase the usage, OpenAI is also granting free access to ChatGPT Go over a period of 12 months and hopes to onboard more Indian users to state-of-the-art AI tools.
