On Friday, August 22, 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the firm will open its first office in India by the end of this year. Altman made the announcement in an X post where he said he would travel to New Delhi personally in September to meet with important stakeholders and assess expansion plans. The shift is made as India becomes one of the fastest-growing markets of ChatGPT.
India has become the second-largest market of ChatGPT, where its user base has quadrupled over the last year, according to OpenAI. Altman said this robust growth and the fast adoption of AI tools were major factors that made OpenAI decide to further its presence in India. The Delhi office will serve as a centre for partnerships with government, businesses, developers and academic institutions.
Altman stated that the process of adoption of AI in India had been phenomenal and noted that users of ChatGPT had increased by 4x in the last year. He also noted that OpenAI is interested in investing a lot in India in order to make a better AI ecosystem. It is believed that the new office will enable OpenAI to collaborate more closely with local partners and quicker innovation to suit the needs of India.
Altman noted in an official statement that India has robust tech talent, a developer community, and government support as part of the IndiaAI Mission. It is a milestone to open our first office and develop a local team to bring advanced AI closer to more people around the country. The initiative is framed as an extension of the vision of OpenAI to develop AI solutions in India as well as in partnership with India.
The growth comes after the introduction of ChatGPT Go, a low-cost subscription at Rs 399, to make the AI tool accessible to more Indian users. The plan provides better limits of usage at an affordable rate. Industry experts observe that the combination of this launch with the office in Delhi will enhance OpenAI's ability to address the increased demand in the region.
The visit of Altman would lead to further collaboration between the technology industry in India. This is seen as a step taken to establish India as a massive consumer market and a centre of expertise in AI in the global race. The deployment of OpenAI in the country will speed up its process of becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence.
