New Delhi: South Korean electronics major Samsung has added another product to its local manufacturing portfolio in India. The company has begun producing laptops at its Greater Noida facility, expanding beyond phones, tablets, and wearables.

The development comes after discussions between Samsung Southwest Asia executives and Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Following the meeting, Vaishnaw said, "Samsung continues to expand manufacturing of its advanced technology devices in Bharat, driven by talent and innovation.”

Samsung already produces a wide range of devices in Noida, including feature phones, smartphones, and tablets. Now laptops are part of the list. Sources confirmed to PTI, "Samsung has expanded its manufacturing portfolio. It has started manufacturing laptops in India at its Greater Noida factory. It has plans to start manufacturing more devices in the country.”

The move aligns with the company’s long-term investment in India. Samsung was among the first global electronics firms to set up a base here, starting operations back in 1996. Over the years, the Noida plant has grown into one of its biggest global mobile production hubs.

Market dynamics and challenges

Samsung is already the second-largest smartphone exporter from India after Apple and operates its second-largest global mobile manufacturing unit in the country. In the tablet market, it holds a 27 percent share, just behind Apple at 30 percent, as per CyberMedia Research.

The company, however, has not had the same impact in laptops. Its entry into local laptop production is being closely watched, especially since India’s laptop and PC market is dominated by brands like HP, Lenovo, and Dell. With the new move, Samsung is signaling intent to grow its presence in a segment where it has lagged behind.

Recent product activity

The company manufactures all smartphones it sells in India, including its latest foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7. These models, priced between ₹1.09 lakh and ₹2.11 lakh, are produced domestically.

In tablets, Samsung has been gaining ground thanks to the Galaxy Tab A9 Plus 5G, which contributed to 81 percent of its shipments in India in the June 2025 quarter. The overall tablet market grew 20 percent year-on-year during the same quarter, with Samsung retaining the number two position.

Earlier this year, TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business, confirmed that the company was preparing to make laptops in India. The actual start of production suggests Samsung is accelerating its "Make in India” strategy to strengthen supply chains and reduce reliance on imports.
