WhatsApp username reservations coming soon — Here’s how you can claim

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that lets users reserve usernames linked to their existing Instagram and Facebook accounts through Meta's Accounts Center. The feature, spotted in WhatsApp beta version 2.25.34.3, aims to prevent impersonation and ensure identity consistency across Meta platforms.

A wider rollout is expected before Meta’s 2026 compliance deadline.

New Delhi: WhatsApp is planning to launch another feature, which will enable the user to book their desired usernames before the company officially introduces its long-awaited usernames feature. The functionality, which is visible in the most recent WhatsApp beta on the Android platform (version 2.25.34.3) in the Google Play Store, will allow users to claim the identical usernames they take on the other platforms developed by Meta, like Facebook and Instagram. This step will help to maintain uniformity throughout the Meta system and ensure that there are no cases when other users will grab popular handles before the actual launch.

The early reservation will be a simplistic task according to the information provided by WaBetaInfo. The users can also enter their current Facebook/Instagram handle directly on WhatsApp, and it will be acknowledged as the owner on the Accounts Center of Meta. When confirmed, the username will be locked and taken by the user so that nobody is able to take it even when the feature of locking the username is in the early stages.

Early access maybe limited

First, there is the possibility that the feature to book usernames will be limited to individuals that already have handles on Facebook or Instagram. This strategy would assist Meta in preserving the brand identity and minimizing the chances of impersonation. Individuals that wish to initiate totally new usernames might have to wait until the global launch.

This feature is under development, though it will be introduced gradually to a few beta users initially and then to everyone. It is said that the full username system may be rolled out before the 2026 compliance deadline of Meta. WhatsApp expects to simplify the entire process of transitioning by merging the reservation system in the first place and ensuring that the usernames remain safe and protected in all Meta services.
