Manhattan: A gunman opened fire in New York's central Manhattan on Monday (local time), leaving at least four people dead. An off-duty New York Police Department officer was also among those killed. The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, was also killed after he fatally shot himself.
The gunman wearing bulletproof jacket and carrying an AR-style rifle fired shots inside a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan that houses several top corporate firms of the country, including Blackstone, the world's largest hedge fund, Colgate-Plamolive and KPMG besides a number of five-star business hotels and National Football League headquarters.
New York Mayor Eric Adams in a video message said that there were multiple injuries in the shooting and expressed "deepest sympathies" to the family of the officer killed. He also advised people who were in the building to stay where they were.
Police said in a post on X that the scene, around Park Avenue and East 51st Street, had been contained and lone shooter is dead. “At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralised," police commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote on X. She, however, did not share the identity of the suspect.
According to Fox News, the New York Police Department said that six people including a police officer were shot in the shooting. Six other people were injured. Following the incident, the area was cordoned and heavy police force was deployed. The skyscraper is located at 345 Park Avenue, in a busy area of Midtown Manhattan near Grand Central Terminal and St Patrick's Cathedral. The Fire Department of New York received the information about the shooting around 6:30 pm.
