Airports in Greece remain suspended due to massive radio frequency failure | Details

According to flight-tracking data, the airspace in Greece was mostly empty on Sunday. The local reports said that air services across airports were suspended from 9 AM local time.

Athens: The flying operations across airports in Greece were halted on Sunday due to radio frequency disruptions across the country. The sir traffic was empty in the country as flights were suspended in all of Greece.

While authorities are still trying to find out the cause of the disruptions, they have said that some flights through the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR). Restrictions have, however been imposed keeping safety measures in mind, officials have said, as per Reuters.

Visuals from the departure terminal at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport showed packed with passengers, waiting for their aircraft.

Several flights were diverted to other countries

Sharing details, ERT said that several flights were diverted to neighbouring countries. An airport official in Israel said that the airspace in Greece would remain closed until 4:00 pm local time. Officials also warned air passengers of further delays.

Authorities issue official statement

“Security Check-In Closed Since 9 AM! Due to the ongoing radio frequency failure in Greek airspace (started early January 4, 2026), NO takeoffs are possible nationwide. Security check-in & departures halted at Athens International since ~9 AM,” Greek City Times posted on X.

It added, “Massive queues are building up, passengers are stranded. Arrivals are landing manually where possible, but many diversions/delays. All Greek airports are affected – FIR Athens is effectively closed. Civil Aviation Authority is rushing fixes, but no ETA yet. Airlines issuing alerts – expect huge delays/cancellations today,” it added.

Officials across Greece are continuously working to restore full radio frequency services and normal traffic flows in the country, even as passengers are still facing long queues extended waiting times, as safety restrictions remain in place and officials are trying to figure out when airports could start normal operations.
