New Delhi: When US President Donald Trump attended the US Open on Sunday things did not go exactly as he may have wished. The President was repeatedly booed, but also at times cheered. This, especially when it comes to him visiting a sporting event, is nothing new.
Donald Trump attended the match between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday. He came as a guest of the luxury watch brand Rolex. Trump’s presence also resulted in the match being delayed as stricter security measures were put in place for his appearance. The match pushed nearly an hour as hundreds of people remained stuck in security while entering the stadium.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were among those from the Trump administration who, along with Trump and members of his family, attended the event.
Things turned to a twist when during the National Anthem, Trump met with boos. Then when he was shown on the Jumbotron saluting from a suite at Arthur Ashe Stadium, he was met with cheers. He was then again booed after the camera panned to him during a set break. The reactions to Trump, as always, remained divisive and intense.
The response from the crowd came after the US Tennis Association faced accusations of censorship. They reportedly directed broadcasters to “refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the president’s attendance in any capacity.” Despite this, broadcasters ABC and ESPN were among those that aired the boos and heckling that occurred.
This though is not the first time that US President Donald Trump has been booed at sporting events. A notable example is this year’s FIFA Club World Cup that was held in the US and another old one is the 2019 World Series in his first term.
Last month during the FIFA Club World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Trump handed trophies to the UK football club Chelsea, Trump was similarly met with boos from the stadium crowd.
