New Delhi: The Jamaat-e-Islami's students wing won the central student union's elections in Bangladesh's Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday. The win came just a week after it won the students election in Dhaka University. The Islami Chhatra Shibir won 20 of the 25 seats in JU Central Student Union elections, said a report in the Times of India.
One must note that the political party won these seats despite being virtually inactive for nearly 35 years on the University campus. ICS however failed to win some key positions, including the top post of Vice President. The top post was won by another party, the Swatantra Shikkharthi Sammilon, whose candidate Abdur Rashid Zitu will now hold the post.
Another student party, the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal failed to win even a single seat in the Student Union elections in JU. This party was backed by former PM Khalid Zia's BNP. Two other major universities in the country are going to hold student union polls soon. These are, the Rajshahi University and the Chattogram University. While the elections in Rajshahi University are scheduled for September 25, the polls in Chattogram University will take place on October 12.
The elections in these Universities are important as Bangladesh has seen numerous instances of campus politics impacting the country's political landscape.
