New Delhi: A Bangladeshi Hindu student who had been missing for nearly a week was found dead in a river in Bangladesh’s Naogaon district. The deceased student has been identified as Abhi, a fourth-year student of the Management Department at Naogaon Government College.
According to reports, police recovered an unidentified body from a river on Saturday afternoon. The information came to light after images and videos of the body began circulating on social media. Abhi’s family later identified the body and rushed to the riverbank. The family confirmed the identity by checking the victim’s belongings and the clothes he was wearing on the day he went missing.
Family members and friends described Abhi as a hardworking and ambitious student who aspired to complete his studies and secure a stable job. His examinations were scheduled to take place in the coming days.
According to relatives, Abhi went missing on January 11 following an altercation at home. When he failed to return hours later, the family grew concerned and began searching for him. Unable to trace him, they subsequently filed a general diary (GD) at Adamdighi Police Station, News 18 reported.
Naogaon Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Niamul Islam said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. “The exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report is received,” he said, adding that the circumstances surrounding Abhi’s death remain unclear.
Family members and local residents have raised concerns over whether the death was accidental or involved foul play. Police said an investigation is underway.
The incident has come amid growing concerns over the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh, with rights groups and activists calling for thorough investigations and accountability in cases involving unexplained deaths.
Amid escalating tensions in Bangladesh, India has decided to designate the country as a “non-family” posting for its diplomats due to security concerns. However, all five Indian diplomatic missions in the neighbouring country will continue to operate at full strength, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. The move comes at a time when threats from extremist and radical elements have reportedly increased, the sources said on condition of anonymity.
