China follows Donald Trump, claims to have mediated India-Pakistan conflict after Operation Sindoor
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claims that China mediated between India and Pakistan following "Operation Sindoor" in May, a similar assertion to that made by US President Trump. However, India vehemently denies any third-party intervention in its negotiations with Pakistan.
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed to have mediated the India-Pakistan armed conflict in May during Operation Sindoor. Now, China has also joined the fray.
The claim of China
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday said that his country had "mediated" India-Pakistan tensions in May. Notably, India has repeatedly denied third-party intervention during the negotiations with Pakistan.
Wang was speaking at the Symposium on the International Situation and China’s Foreign Relations in Beijing when he said, "This year, local wars and cross-border conflicts flared up more often than at any time since the end of WWII. Geopolitical turbulence continued to spread."
'Mediated tensions between Pakistan and India'
According to news agency PTI, Wang said, "To build peace that lasts, we have taken an objective and just stance, and focused on addressing both symptoms and root causes."
He added, "Following this Chinese approach to settling hotspot issues, we mediated in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, the tensions between Pakistan and India, the issues between Palestine and Israel, and the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand." India has time and again reiterated claims of third-party intervention during the ceasefire negotiations with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor in May.
'China-India relations showed good momentum'
Wang also stated that relations between India and China have improved, and Beijing had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in August of this year. He said, "Also, this year, we invited the leaders of India and the DPRK to China. China-India relations showed a good momentum, and the traditional friendship with the DPRK was cemented and further promoted."
