Explained: Who is the new pro-Trump Polish President Karol Nawrocki
Nawrocki is relatively politically inexperienced and was not even a political party member until being approached by the conservative Law and Justice party that governed Poland from 2015 to 2023.
New Delhi: In a first, conservative historian Karol Nawrocki on Wednesday was inaugurated as Poland's new president. In what can be seen as a rightward trend in Europe as a whole, Nawrocki’s selection can be seen as a turn for the country towards a more nationalistic and conservative side and also calls into question the longevity and influence of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his government.
The selection of the new President is important. While most of the routine power resides with the country’s Prime Minister, when it comes to issues like influencing foreign policy and veto laws, the President’s role is important.
A new Polish era
Chants of "Karol, Karol” and rhythmic clapping welcomed the new President to the Poland’ parliament which is called Sejm where he came to take oath to start his five-year term.
"The free choice of a nation has put me before you today,” Nawrocki said during his inauguration speech. He also lashed out at "electoral propaganda” and "lies” during the campaign that culminated in the June 1 runoff vote, but added, "As a Christian, I forgive with peace of mind and from the bottom of my heart all this contempt, and what happened during the elections.”
The new President-elect has been a known supporter of US President Donald Trump, someone who supported him ahead of a narrow victory in a runoff election in June. Nawrocki is relatively politically inexperienced and was not even a political party member until being approached by the conservative Law and Justice party that governed Poland from 2015 to 2023.
Poland has strongly supported Ukraine in its war against Russia, a conflict that is important for Polish interest in the region. "I will of course support relations within the European Union, but I will never agree to the European Union taking competences away from Poland, especially in matters that are not enshrined in the European treaties,” he said.
Nawrocki also added how he looks to "strive to make the Polish army the largest NATO force in the European Union” and said Poles were "responsible for building the strength of NATO’s eastern flank.” Insisting on military prowess Nawrocki said he would "strive to make the Polish army the largest NATO force in the European Union” and said Poles were "responsible for building the strength of NATO’s eastern flank.”
The new President is popular with his public and the main charm comes from his espousal of conservative values, something which he is extremely openly vocal about. Be it his alignment with the country’s traditional and patriotic values, or what his supporters feel is his anti-woke stance, Nawrocki has been able to become a popular name in the politics of Poland in a short period of time.
The US conservative group CPAC held its first meeting in Poland during Nawrocki’s campaign and Kristi Noem, the US Homeland Security secretary and a Trump ally, praised Nawrocki as his campaign echoed themes popular on the US right as well.
Nawrocki’s quick political rise has seen accusations of him being tied to the country's underworld figures, and he has also been linked to a scandal involving the acquisition of a Gdansk apartment from a retiree. Despite this his swift rise is seen by many to only be coming, and thought of as part of the rise in conservative, rightward politics in Europe as a whole.
