Hamas to surrender arms for political identity in US deal as Israel vows destruction: Report
According to the agreement, as has been reported by Sky News Arabia TV, citing a Palestinian source, Hamas will surrender its weapons and transfer maps of the Gaza Strip's underground tunnels if the group is recognised as a political party.
New Delhi: In news that can have a tectonic effect on global politics, Hamas, the group that has governed the Gaza Strip and has been in armed conflict with Israel, has reportedly agreed to a deal with the US.
Hamas to surrender weapons
According to the agreement, as has been reported by Sky News Arabia TV, citing a Palestinian source, Hamas will surrender its weapons and transfer maps of the Gaza Strip’s underground tunnels if the group is recognised as a political party.
Sky News Arabia TV quoted the Palestinian source as saying that the "the understandings within the framework of which the organization will disarm will allow those interested in Hamas’ political and military leadership to leave the Gaza Strip with an American promise that Israel will not harm it in the future."
The source added that "the Americans agreed to integrate several Hamas police officers and officials in the past into the management of the ‘new Gaza’ on the condition that they undergo an Israeli-American security check."
PNA not against agreement, Israel disagrees
The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has reportedly agreed to the agreements if they end the war, establish a ceasefire, and speed up the reconstruction. However, Israel has reportedly expressed disagreement with some points of the deal, especially those related to Hamas remaining a political party in the Palestinian arena.
Israel vows destruction of Hamas
Israel's Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has responded to the Sky News report and said, "To the extent that the publications about the feasibility of allowing Hamas murderers to continue to exist in Gaza are true, they are very serious."
He added that Israel waged a war "to destroy Hamas" and they cannot be "whitewashed under the guise of a ‘political movement’ and allow its Nazi terrorists, who were responsible for massacre, murder, rape, and burning of babies, to continue to effectively control the Strip. Hamas must be destroyed, in accordance with the central goal of the war."
Donald Trump warns Hamas
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday the first charter of the Gaza Board of Peace at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland's Davos. The charter of the board came into full force, and it was declared a full-fledged international organization. He claimed that the board will bring stability to war-torn Gaza. Trump said, "If Hamas doesn’t do what they promised they will do, I think they probably will, but they were born with rifles in their hands. They have to give up their weapons, and if they don’t do that, it is going to be the end of them."
