New Delhi: A day before his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump said that the former "does not have anything" unless he approves it. The two leaders are scheduled to meet in Florida on Sunday as part of efforts to reach a peace deal to end Russia's four-year war in Ukraine that has killed tens of thousands since 2022.
"He doesn't have anything until I approve it. So we'll see what he's got," Trump was quoted as saying in an interview published by Politico on Friday.
20-point peace plan
This comes days after Zelensky shared details of an updated 20-point peace plan which includes a proposed demilitarised zone. As part of the updated peace deal, Ukraine is expected to withdraw its troops from the east. The Ukrainian President described the plan as the "main framework for ending the war" and the proposed security guarantees from the US, Nato and Europeans for a co-ordinated military response if Russia invaded Ukraine again.
Trump said his meeting with the Ukrainian President could be productive."I think it’s going to go good with him. I think it’s going to go good with [Vladimir] Putin," he said. The US President also said that he would speak with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin "soon and as much as I want".
What Zelensky said
Zelensky earlier said that "a lot can be decided before the New Year," as Washington drives efforts to end Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine.
"As for the sensitive issues, we will discuss both Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. We will certainly discuss other issues as well," the Ukrainian President told reporters in a WhatsApp chat, according to Reuters.
