New Delhi: Pakistan is witnessing political chaos as supporters of Imran Khan are consistently protesting for his release, according to reports.
Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has reportedly blamed the authorities for using water cannons to disperse protesters. The protesters included Khan’s sisters, who were holding a sit-in outside Adiala Jail.
In a video shared on X, Moeed Pirzada, CEO and Editor of Global Village Space and noted journalist, it can be seen that people were bravely facing the water cannons that the authorities allegedly used to disperse the protestors. He shared the video with the caption, "Iconic Image from Pakistan - but world doesn’t want to understand."
Pakistani authorities reportedly used water cannons to disperse Imran Khan’s sisters and PTI workers outside Adiala jail. His sisters Aleema, Noreen Khan, and Dr Uzma Khan began the protest at around 2 pm on Tuesday, with numerous party workers and former senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan joining them. The sit-in protest took place for almost 12 hours before police moved in at about 2:10 am, using high-pressure cold-water jets to disperse the crowd. They reportedly detained several PTI workers who were pushed by the water cannons into a nearby vacant plot.
PTI has reportedly said that the protest took place as Khan's sisters were not allowed to meet him. It slammed the government for using water cannons on seemingly peaceful protests, calling it an outright assault on people's constitutional rights. Also, it has urged international human rights groups to speak on the issue of Imran Khan, the cricketer-turned-politician, who has been in prison since August 2023. There is reportedly growing frustration among his supporters due to the restricted access to Khan inside the jail.
