Chennai: Today marks the final day for submitting enumeration forms as part of the Election Commission’s intensive Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu. Voters who fail to submit their forms risk exclusion from the draft electoral roll scheduled for publication on December 16. However, the Commission has clarified that missing the deadline does not permanently disqualify voters, as a claims-and-objections window will follow.
The SIR, a comprehensive annual exercise undertaken with greater rigor ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, aims to clean and update the voter database across all 234 constituencies. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been conducting door-to-door visits to distribute forms collecting details such as name, address, Aadhaar number, and family voter history from 2002.
Current Status and Next Steps
Official data indicates that forms have been distributed to 6,41,10,380 out of 6,41,14,587 registered voters in the state. As of yesterday, 6,40,83,414 forms—approximately 99.95%—had been uploaded. While the vast majority have complied, a few thousand voters are yet to submit their forms.
Based on the collected data, the draft roll will reflect significant updates: names of deceased voters, duplicate entries, and individuals who have permanently relocated will be removed. Voters are advised to carefully check the draft roll when it is published. If a name is missing or details are incorrect, individuals can apply for inclusion or correction during the subsequent one-month claims-and-objections period, which will remain open till mid-January.
Why This Deadline Matters
Officials emphasize that while today’s deadline is crucial for smooth inclusion in the draft roll, it is not the final opportunity. Voters who miss today can still apply later, but they may face additional procedural steps. The final electoral roll will be published in January 2026. Only voters whose names appear in the final list will be eligible to cast their ballot in the upcoming state elections.
The Election Commission has urged all remaining voters to submit their forms immediately and to verify their details proactively once the draft list is released to ensure their franchise is secured.
