Indian embassy in China issues advisory for Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims amid violence in Nepal

The Indian Embassy in Beijing has issued an advisory for Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims travelling via Nepal as violent anti-corruption protests rock the Himalayan nation. Over 20 people have died in the violence.

The advisory comes after violence swept Nepal after a protest over the government's social media ban spiralled into a larger anti-corruption movement.

New Delhi: The Indian Embassy in Beijing on Wednesday issued an advisory for Indian nationals travelling to Kailash Mansarovar via Nepal through private tour operators, in view of the prevailing unrest in the Himalayan nation. The mission has also urged citizens to exercise caution.

"The prevailing situation in Nepal has impacted the planned travel arrangements of Indian citizens undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra organized by private tour operators via Nepal," the embassy said in a statement.

It added that Indian citizens presently in the Tibet Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China, should also exercise due caution. "Given the high altitude and challenging terrain, they are advised to take the necessary care and precautions for their health and well-being. They are also advised to follow advisories from local authorities as well as the Embassy of India in Beijing (@EOIBeijing) and the Embassy of India, Kathmandu (@IndiaInNepal)," it said.

The advisory comes after violence swept Nepal after a protest over the government's social media ban spiralled into a larger anti-corruption movement. More than 20 people have been killed, and mobs have set fire to several important buildings, including the Parliament and the residences of the president and the prime minister. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned in the wake of the unrest.
