New Delhi: As hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia continue with no signs of de-escalation, the Indian Embassy in Thailand has issued a travel advisory, urging Indian nationals to stay informed and avoid certain areas near the Thailand-Cambodia border. According to Thai authorities, over one lakh people have been evacuated from the border region and relocated to more than 300 shelters.
In a post on X, the embassy advised Indian travellers to monitor official Thai sources for the latest developments. "In view of the situation near the Thailand-Cambodia border, all Indian travellers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including TAT Newsroom. As per the Tourism Authority of Thailand, places mentioned in the following link are not recommended for travel," the advisory read.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in a post on X, has warned tourists against visiting several popular destinations across the provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat. These areas are highly popular with tourists but has been termed high-risk. The conflict, one of the bloodiest in recent years, has displaced thousands. Tensions flared after a Cambodian soldier was reportedly killed near the border earlier this month. The situation escalated on Thursday when both sides exchanged missile and artillery fire. At least 15 people have been reported dead on the Thai side, while Cambodia has yet to confirm its casualties. Over 40 people, including Thai soldiers, have also suffered injuries.
Both nations have accused each other of initiating the attacks. Diplomatic relations have also deteriorated between the neighbours. When Thailand expelled Cambodia's ambassador, Phnom Penh downgraded diplomatic ties in retaliation.
The UN Security Council is expected to convene an emergency meeting, as major global powers including the United States, France, the European Union, and China have called for an immediate ceasefire.
