New Delhi: An Indian woman was caught shoplifting at a US Target store in January. The video of her arrest has now gone viral on social media. The video dated January 15, shows the woman, sobbing, choking and gasping for breath. At the very beginning of the video, a police officer can be heard telling her, "Right now, you are not free to leave."
The woman can be seen struggling to breathe right at the start of the video. An officer can then be heard telling her to calm down. He said, "Do me a favour, take a big breath as deep in as you can. You gotta take a deep breath. Do not hyperventilate. Cause I gotta be able to talk to you, and I can't talk to you with you breathing like that."
The officer then asked her if she spoke English. To this, the woman responded by saying that her English was not very good. However she refused to have a translator.
The police personnel then asks her what language she spoke. To this she responded by saying, "Gujarati." The officer then asks, where is that (language) from. The woman responds by saying, "India."
The police also enquired if she had any medical condition, given her state of hyperventilation.
The store staff then showed the officers the footage of the woman walking out of the store, without paying. They told the Police that she was a regular at the store.
During questioning the woman revealed that she had a Washington-issued driving license. The store staff identified her as a regular customer and said that this was the first time that she had done something like this.
The woman told cops that she planned to sell the items she stole from the Target store. Cops then told her that she would have to appear in court.
This is the second incident of an Indian woman having been caught shoplifting in the US. In an earlier case, a middle-aged Indian woman, who was a tourist in the US, was caught shoplifting. When she was caught and questioned by the police, she offered to pay. The cops denied and continued to question her. The woman then told them that she is not even from the country and would be going back to India. To this, one lady officer can be heard saying, "Are you allowed to steal things in India? I did not think so."
